MODERATION AND QUALITY ASSURANCE NEWSLETTER

December 2023

The team at our hui whakapūmau with Down Under Honey in Feilding Manawatu

He mihi

Festive greetings and happy holidays from the Quality Assurance and Enhancement whānau as 2023 quickly draws to an end.

We want to express our gratitude to you all for your mahi and support in our new approach to quality assurance. We’ve had a fantastic year connecting via our online and onsite hui whakapūmau, the many workshops conducted by our team, and your continued support through your valuable feedback. We look forward to continuing to build and strengthen our current partnership in the new year.

The Muka Tangata whānau came together in our Pōneke office in November to celebrate a year of hard work and progress. It was a time to reflect on our achievements for the year and to look forward to creating a stronger tomorrow.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi he toa takitini kē

Our success is a collaborative effort.

Ngā mihi nui

Pānui - Notices

  • If you want us to process pre-moderation submissions before Christmas, please get your submission to us by Friday 1 December and we will do our best to turn that around for you.
Material can be submitted at any time, and if identified as urgent we will prioritise it and process it as quickly as we can.
Moderation activity will recommence in the New Year on 15 January 2024.

  • Our 2024 moderation calendar will be distributed in February 2024. Keep an eye on your inbox and our website.

  • Unit Standards interpretations - An interim measure until such time as the unit standard in questions is reviewed in full. The Unit Standard interpretations are updated monthly and published on our website: Unit Standard interpretation.

  • Our 14 industry-specific Workforce Development Plans were put online this year along with investment advice to TEC. They provide some great insights for your TEO around food and fibre industries, workforce and learners.
We've been working on updating our Roadmap actions and have begun working on a Māori plan.

Vehicles and machinery best practice assessing workshop

In October, we presented our external post-moderation results and findings to providers at a workshop, made up of providers who deliver unit standards in vehicles and machinery.

We promoted quality assessment design and marking guides to increase acceptance results. We also emphasised that check box tasks must have associated secondary evidence.

Thank you to all of you who attended this workshop.

If you attended this workshop or any of our previous workshops, we would love to hear your feedback: Workshops Survey

We also wrote about it on our website: Improving Vehicles and Machinery programme outcomes is a focus for Muka Tangata.

Meeting considerations around te ao māori in programme endorsement

We are dedicated to supporting providers to meet our programme endorsement considerations, including te ao Māori. For many, this is a new concept, and we provide guidance, resources, and collaboration to ensure our partners are supported in our approaches.

We’ve published some information on our website about

  • te ao Māori considerations
  • WDCs common ways of working
  • interim measures to evaluate te ao Māori consideration
  • supporting provider journeys
  • mātauranga Māori workshops.

Updates – Resource Repository

We’ve heard from our partners that successful Māori-centric models are not widely known or accessible. In response, we created the Successful Māori-centric practices and models repository. We’ve recently added videos that cover:

  • Tuakana/teina
  • Te whare tapa whā

Tuakana/teina is a concept founded in te ao Māori (the Māori world), which describes a relationship dynamic that involves mentoring and learning. The practice is used to pass down knowledge that can be effective in work-based learning, classroom, on the job, and all other contexts in the food and fibre sector.

Te Whare tapa whā is a Māori concept that represents the four dimensions of wellbeing: taha wairua (spiritual well-being), taha hinengaro (mental and emotional well-being), taha tinana (physical well-being), and taha whānau (family and social well-being). Incorporating whare tapa whā principles can help promote holistic well-being among learners, kaimahi (staff) and organisations.

Aka Pārongo survey

We've been working with Aka Pārongo for 6 months now so it is timely to get your feedback on different aspects of the system.

This survey will ask you to rate your experiences and ask for your suggestions for improvement in 6 different sections:

  1. Ease of use
  2. Look and feel
  3. Documentation and Training Materials
  4. Accessibility
  5. Reliability
  6. Performance

Three new nutrient application micro-credentials

Muka Tangata and Hanga-Aro-Rau have partnered with Groundspread NZ, MBIE and other partners in the groundspreading industry to produce three new micro-credentials, all of which have now been published on the NZQCF and are available to providers.

The three micro-credentials are:

Groundspread Nutrient Application for Primary Industry (Level 3, 35 credits)

Heavy Vehicle Recovery Skills (Level 4, 5 credits)

Off-road Heavy Vehicle Driving Skills (Level 4, 25 credits)

Success story

Muka Tangata has been working with training providers in the Apiculture industry to achieve more consistent and appropriate assessment materials.

Quality Assurance and Enhancement team out and about

Members from our team enjoyed NZQA’s Tertiary Assessor Support Symposium held in Tāmaki Makaurau in October.

A series of kaupapa (topics) were workshopped and discussed including mātauranga Māori, assessment design, moderation, responsive practices for Pacific peoples, and micro credentials and skill standards. It was a good chance to upskill our team in moderation, and to share insights and learnings from a WDC perspective.

Ka nui te mihi ki a koutou, Mana Tohu Mātauranga o Aotearoa.
