MODERATION AND QUALITY ASSURANCE NEWSLETTER December 2022
He Mihi Kia ora koutou, Time flies, and we are quickly approaching the conclusion of the year. I want to express my gratitude for the mahi and interactions you have shown us this year and we look forward to continuing this connection in 2023. This was a year of building our internal processes, kaimahi recruitment and relationship building with our providers. We engaged with 26 providers and schools throughout the year to undertake whakawhanaungatanga; to explain who we are, and what we do, learn how we can support them, answer any questions, tour the facilities and get an understanding of their priorities in this changing vocational education landscape. To those who engaged in the SAARA moderation system review project, we have collected responses and have gained valuable insight to what has been done well, and what we need to do as a team, and organisation moving forward. Information is powerful, and we appreciate the time and knowledge you shared with us to review the moderation practices. We have several exciting things happening in the New Year, and we look forward to working with you all.

Muka Tangata Quality Assurance Workshops Our team have been holding a series of professional development workshops across the motu for Assessors and Teachers who deliver and assess food and fibre unit standards. The workshops covered an introduction to our Workforce Development Council, mātauranga Māori principles, best practice for assessment and provided an opportunity to network with colleagues in the same industry. The kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face) interactions have been invaluable and allowed our team to increase whakawhanaugatanga with our partners who we work with every day. This, in turn, has created a deeper understanding of the mahi both parties are conducting to allow us to mahi tahi (work together). We'd would like to acknowledge the following Providers who allowed us to use their spaces at no cost: Northtec NMIT Otago Polytechnic EIT Toi Ohomai With their generosity, we have been able to run a greater number of workshops in a more diverse set of locations.
Pānui - News Muka Tangata all staff hui All our staff gathered in the Pōneke office in November. This was an occasion for team building and professional development over two days. Our team used this opportunity to carry out some mahi in the moderation space and discuss industry wider themes with the entire organisation. As most of us work remotely it was a fantastic time to connect kanohi ki te kanohi. Moderation calendar Our 2023 National External Quality Assurance and Moderation calendar for Providers will be released early in January 2023. This is being developed to support your organisation in preparing for external quality assurance and moderation with Muka Tangata, and may also assist with developing internal quality systems. Confidentiality When you submit samples to us for moderation, please be assured that your intellectual property is treated confidentially. It is best practice to also advise the learners that their assessments may be submitted to us or NZQA for quality assurance purposes.
