2024 in review: Moderation
For us, 2024 was a year of constant change, activity, and progress. We made significant strides in moderation. Over the year, we conducted 10 online seminars and held 26 hui whakapūmau visits, engaging in both onsite visits and online discussions to support providers.
Our moderation efforts included pre-moderation of 381 assessments and post-moderation of 1,357 learner samples. Additionally, we provided support to 26 providers with 202 unit standards for Consent to Assess and endorsed 33 programmes.
A major highlight was the improvement in verification rates, which rose from 76% in 2023 to 83% in 2024 - a testament to your ongoing commitment to quality and excellence. Ka rawe!
Quality assurance workshops
Following the success of our previous seminars, we are excited to offer a series of new online professional development workshops this year. These workshops are designed to support schools and providers delivering and assessing food and fibre unit standards.
This year, our workshops will cover:
- A guide to unit standards and best-practice assessment
- An opportunity to share how te ao Māori can be embedded in teaching and learning materials
- Introduction to skill standards
- Muka Tangata Workforce Development Plans and TEC investment advice
- Assessing skill and unit standards
- A guide to good programme design and delivery
- A guide to assessment design

Post-assessment moderation continues to evolve
We have a ‘continuous improvement’ approach to our post-moderation provider portal, Aka Pārongo, to provide a smooth experience for all users.
The latest updates aim to simplify the process, making it more efficient and user-friendly.
Key improvements include:
- Updated post-moderation coversheet: Now available directly on the portal so that you can easily submit the required information.
- Pre-moderation indicator: A new feature that allows to mark whether their materials require pre-moderation.
- Enhanced comment section: Providers can now include comprehensive context reports directly within the portal if they haven’t uploaded it via the supporting evidence.
Please note that the portal issues we were experiencing late last year have been resolved.
Update: Review of Muka Tangata Consent and Moderation Requirements
We are pleased to share that the CMR (Consent and Moderation Requirements) application has been submitted to NZQA for review and approval.
