MODERATION AND QUALITY ASSURANCE NEWSLETTER

December 2024

Members of the Quality Assurance and Enhancement and Qualifications and Standards teams at the PIPTA conference in October.

He mihi

As we approach the end of another productive year, it’s time to reflect on our achievements and set our sights on the future.

We’re proud of the mahi and feedback we’ve received about our new approach to quality assurance (which we started in February 2024), and we’re planning to build on that in 2025.

Our plan for National External Moderation in 2025 will look similar to this year’s. We’ve heard that informing you at the start of the year on what subject areas and when we’ll call for moderation samples was helpful to you, and we will continue to do that. We know that providers who asked for workshops with us felt they were incredibly useful, and we are continuing to offer these in 2025. We are looking at the content of our planned seminars and looking at additional subjects - watch this space! And WDCs are collectively working with NZQA to reduce any compliance burden where there is any overlap in our legislated functions.

Thank you for your continued support, commitment and passion. Together, we are making a difference.

From all of the team (including our Contracted Moderators) Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi he toa takitini kē

Our success is a collaborative effort.

Ngā mihi nui

    Qualifications and Standards update

Muka Tangata Qualification and Standards team are nearing the end of a very productive year and wish to thank everyone who they have collaborated with during the year to help them achieve their mahi.

The team have been working on the below qualifications development projects over the past year:

Agriculture

The project team is currently seeking feedback from the three advisory groups on draft qualifications for Level 3 Agriculture.

Entry Level

Insights have been gathered on skills, qualification structures, micro-credentials, GPOs and credits. The project team is consulting on pathways, proposed GPOs and a qualification structure with the working group.

Forestry

In early 2024, it was agreed to pause the review to secure adequate industry representation for the remainder of the project.

A Forestry pan-sector governance group has been formed that is to become the key point of contact for the review.

Seafood

Since the Seafood qualifications development project began in April 2023, the team have reviewed seven qualifications, developed two new qualifications, and created an ongoing workplan to produce micro-credentials and skill standards to support the new qualifications. 290 unit standards were rolled over to ensure that providers can continue to deliver programmes while this large volume of work is underway.

The project team are now developing the remaining products required to fill out the contexts for the level 3 and 4 qualifications.

Read about our development project on our website: Qualifications development projects.

    PIPTA 2024

Our Quality Assurance and Enhancement and Qualifications and Standards teams were thrilled to attend the PIPTA 2024 Conference in Nelson, hosted by NMIT in October. We had a wonderful time engaging with providers, exploring innovative solutions, and participating in insightful discussions.

The event provided a fantastic opportunity to network, learn, and share our experiences with fellow professionals. Overall, it was an enriching and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

A special shout out to Femke and the team from NMIT for an awesome event.
